Here’s a fun video we made this summer; Enjoy! Summer Nights!

A Letter Home…

July 29, 2015
Dearest parents, siblings, roommates, pastors, friends, classmates, supporters, and others back home: What a privilege and honor it has been to serve here at Heart of Christ this summer! We’ve seen, smelled, heard, and ate things beyond our wildest imaginations- and suddenly, two months are up and soon we’ll be headed home! We sure are excited for hot showers, pizza, and our own beds, not to mention embracing each one of you again at the airport, church service, or wherever else we see you SO SOON! That being said, as we head your way, we’d like to share a few things with you to make the transition a little easier (for both us and you). So, please: Have Grace With Us: Chances are, the “smallest” things could really fluster us, such as everyone knowing E…

20 Things About Living in Honduras for 2 Months

July 22, 2015
1- Produce is so cheap. The other day I bought 2 bananas, 2 mangos, and a HUGE carrot for 87 cents. 2- We take bucket showers. We use rain water that flows into buckets spaced throughout the compound. If it doesn’t rain, we have to order water that comes on trucks. We take showers once or twice a week. 3- The currency is called lempiras instead of dollars. 4- Peanut butter isn’t a thing. 5- We go to a pulperia at least once a day, sometimes twice! Pulperias are little houses that sell just about everything, but mainly snacks & drinks. They are EVERYWHERE. Our excuse for spending so many lemps at the pulperia is that we are contributing to the local economy. 6- I think there are more fried chicken places here than KFCs in America. 7- You usually say “Buenas” or some form of hello to …

A Cornflake Craving

July 21, 2015
Every. Single. Morning. We have eaten a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast for the past 45 mornings without fail. Not once have I eaten something else or skipped out on having them. My day just wouldn’t be the same without them. I didn’t think they were anything special at first, but as the weeks went on I discovered a love for them. A love that turned into a craving. I wake up in the morning stoked because I know a bowl of cornflakes awaits me. Now I can’t imagine not having them to kick start my day…. It would be tragic! My entire day would be off if I didn’t have my cornflakes. They have become a part of my life and daily routine. However, there is no way I would have begun to crave cornflakes if I hadn’t eaten them every day and made them a part of my life. It’s the same …

Let’s talk about Depression

July 18, 2015
I believe you’ve been led to this blog post for a reason, so before we go any further, I must first say this: THERE IS HOPE. I remember it hitting me like a ton of bricks. I was sitting at my brother’s baseball game, chatting with my sister about all things life, when with deep look in her eyes, revelation came, “I think I am depressed.” Tears came like the rush out of the gutters into barrels after a strong Honduran afternoon rain, and I spend the next thirty-six hours weeping, a combination of:                 Sadness: why did life seem so hard right now?                 Relief: Well, at least now I can name what has been off.   &nbs…

The New Gentleman in My Life

July 17, 2015
I always knew that He existed, but I was never really taught anything about Him. I never studied the word to get to know Him or to find out about who He is. I ignored His voice and pushed Him off of my mind. I’m talking about the Holy Spirit. My mind was literally blown the third night of training camp. We had a speaker come and give a session about the Holy Spirit. This was the first teaching I had ever heard on this topic. The very first point that the speaker made was this simple yet perspective changing truth: “The Holy Spirit is a “HE” not an it” I was so taken back…. a “He”? I had never really thought of that before. I think I had always viewed the Holy Spirit as an “it”. That speaker had me hooked from that moment on. He continued to tell us about the character of the Holy S…

Joy in the Face of Death

July 17, 2015
On July 6th, our host, Gracie, called me in after devotions and told me she had a word for me. She told me that during devotions she just kept seeing a black, dark spot in my near future. She didn’t know anymore about it besides that it would be the hardest thing that I have had to face. She told me I needed to prepare and if I didn’t I would have a really rough time making it through. But if I prepared well, God would take me through with ease and I would be able to turn to him during the trial. That day I finally had a passion to dig into the Bible because I was able to see the power of it and not just see it as a book of boring words that didn’t apply to my life. On Tuesday, July 14th, only 8 days later, my grandad passed away. Immediately I knew it was the trial Gracie was talking a…

Change Is Possible

July 16, 2015
I haven’t wrote a blog since the first week, and I’m not really sure why because I love to write. I think it’s a great way to get out what you’re feeling, and blogging is even better because then people can see what you have to say and learn from it. I’ve been choosing to journal over blog which for me seemed like the better choice, and also easier. But now I’m realizing that it’s not just about me, it’s about the people who might come on this trip later or the people who need to read something that might help their relationship with God. So now that I’ve realized this, I look back over all the time that has passed and try to think of something that’s worth blogging over. I have many stories that I could tell or many revelations that I’ve had. I think those would be good things to say …

Choosing Joy & Cultivating Gratefulness

July 15, 2015
This past week, The Lord has really been teaching our team a lot about joy through the avenue of cultivating gratefulness. The book “One Thousand Gifts” (one you should check out if you’ve yet to read it) has been making its way across the team, along with some participant-led team times relating to this subject. It has really convicted my heart once again, since originally reading this book last fall. Yesterday we went out to prayer walk and do village ministry. We returned to a house some of the girls had prayed for the other day to check in on a few women. Since I had gone another direction with a different group the first time, this was my official introduction to someone who’s probably my new favorite human being, Martha.  She was sitting on her bed,…
