One of the great things about being at Zion's Gate is that there are so many different types of ministry available to do. There are relationships to build, English classes to teach, construction projects on the property, street ministry, you name it. It has been really great to just watch everyone on the team start to find their niche.
I got to do a lot of work on the property this week. We have a number of projects going on at once right now, which is cool because there's a lot to be done and we can see a lot of progress being made at once.
Right now the main project is building a building to house and breed rabbits in. It will be a good business for the property, and a way for a few of the boys who live there to make some money. In addition to that, Fisher and I are working on the cactus garden, digging and pick axe-ing a trench to fill with gravel to help the water runoff as well as to make it prettier. Maria, Amber, and Olivia are renovating the area near the road (formerly just weeds) to make a nice garden to make Zion's Gate more inviting to the community. Jen has been working hard at clearing the weeds and small trees (with a machete!!) and yesterday I had the privilege of helping her out. Her goal is to make a soccer field so that the boys can play on the property instead of in the streets.
We started teaching English to our sixth graders that week, and I'm encouraged that most of them are very eager to learn. I really look forward to getting to know Michael and Eduardo, the two boys I will be working with.
Street ministry got started this week as well, and though I haven't been able to go yet myself it had been great hearing about the way that God is blessing the labors of my team in La Kennedy.
Here in Honduras I'm beginning to see what Paul wrote about in 1 Corinthians 9:22: "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some." Here we are construction workers, gardeners, teachers, friends (and even punching bags to some of the little ones). It's not about what we do, but doing it all to the glory of God. We look to bless people physically and to share the gospel, but sometimes the best way to bless someone is with a smile, a hug, or just listening to their story when no one else wants to.
