20 Things About Living in Honduras for 2 Months

1- Produce is so cheap. The other day I bought 2 bananas, 2 mangos, and a HUGE carrot for 87 cents.
2- We take bucket showers. We use rain water that flows into buckets spaced throughout the compound. If it doesn’t rain, we have to order water that comes on trucks. We take showers once or twice a week.
3- The currency is called lempiras instead of dollars.
4- Peanut butter isn’t a thing.
5- We go to a pulperia at least once a day, sometimes twice! Pulperias are little houses that sell just about everything, but mainly snacks & drinks. They are EVERYWHERE. Our excuse for spending so many lemps at the pulperia is that we are contributing to the local economy.
6- I think there are more fried chicken places here than KFCs in America.
7- You usually say “Buenas” or some form of hello to everyone you pass, even strangers!
8- People never leave their house without looking their absolute best. Women never wear athletic clothes. Sweatpants aren’t a thing. Working out isn’t either.
9- If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down. And by flushing we mean take a bucket, fill it with some rain water, and pour it in the toilet.
10- Two words.. LICE CHECK. (use your imagination)
11- Bug spray is my bestfriend and worst enemy: it saves me from chikungunya and dengue but breaks my wallet after buying 100 bottles.
12- Everything in construction is done by hand.
13- It’s hard to find anyone who likes a sport other than soccer.
14- Cornflakes on cornflakes on cornflakes. 53 days of cornflakes.
15- Hand sanitizer is a life saver.
16- No mirrors, no problems.
17- Beans, beans, the magical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot.
18- Going to the ATM is a delicacy because it’s air conditioned.
19- We must use clean water from our water bottles to brush our teeth in the shower. There are no sinks or running water.
20- Who needs an alarm when you have 15 kids screaming, laughing, or crying at 5:30 in the morning? But hey, we wouldn’t have it any other way!
