Ohhh Middle School

Middle School, the time period every girl describes as point blank, hell. I remember the first day of middle school, wearing Limited Too was absolutely no longer acceptable and Abercrombie popped collars were a necessity. I soon realized that first day that having my mom pull up my hair for me was no longer acceptable. This conclusion being because almost every girl was wearing their hair curled like Lizzie McGuire.  Middle school here isn't quite so stereotypical, but here or home I promise you I wouldn't want to go back. Our first day teaching English to the...

Pray without Ceasing

This has been our first week of real ministry work here in Honduras, and it has definitely taught me and stretched me in ways I wouldn't have thought. The three main ministries we are working on are English classes at the school, working on the property, and street ministry in La Kennedy. At 8:40 we go to the school to teach English to the sixth graders. We each have two students who we are working with for the rest of the time that we are here. I have to girls named Annie and Yennifer. They are extremely smart, and I am excited to keep working with them. We went to school on Monday,...

Spiritual Landscape of Honduras

Spiritual landscape of Honduras: 80% of birth certificates do not have a father’s signature; a lot of children grow up fatherless, leaving mothers to raise and provide for the entire family Honduras has the #1 intentional homicide rate in the world  mostly because of  prevalent gang violence and drug trafficking Honduras is 80% Catholic and 20% Protestant, but these titles are mostly nominal and/or mixed with other religions; based on conversations that I’ve had so far, people have head knowledge of God as a “powerful creator”, but have no idea what it...

A Working Father

Jesus once said that His Father is always working and that He too was at work. We have a working Father, a God who is always moving, shaping and transforming in order to glorify Himself. The exciting thing is that we, as Christ followers, are invited to join Him in His work. My faith has been challenged in many ways this past week. Ministry seemed pretty slow. I woke several mornings with a lie from Satan, "The Lord is not working, He isn't moving." I had slowly allowed a lie into my heart that suggested God was not moving in my life, but the Lord addressed this as I brought...

La puerta de sion y los chicos salvados

It has officially been one week since I flew out of Chicago to go to Atlanta… Wow! The days have just blurred together. I already feel like I have known my teammates for months now…some even years.  Zion's Gate feels like home to me, and I'm so exited to be here for another 7 weeks. Training camp was pretty incredible. I was nervous at first that I would be impatient for the three days and that I would just want to leave already.  It was really helpful, though.  I feel like I grew closer to the Lord in just those few days and I gained a pretty solid...

Make a Joyful Noise

God has really been teaching me how less is more, especially in my worship. Back at home, I usually worship and sing songs along with a guitar, piano, and/or drums. God has been taking me to a deeper place of intimacy by stripping all those things away and leaving me with just my voice. Personal worship for me is sitting alone in my tent, pretending to play the piano on the tarp floor and silently mouthing along lyrics of worship music. Worship as a group is us lifting up our voices acapella, slapping our legs, clapping, and using random things like empty water jugs, the cross-hatched backs...
