Conversations In La Kennedy

One of the ministries we've been a part of is reaching out to people living on the streets. We have been going into an area La Kennedy, and talking to people that have been called the trash of Honduras.

Most days, a part of our team will go into a La Kennedy colony. The houses are shacks made out of wood, metal, and blankets. They are dirty places, with trash lying everywhere. Almost all of the people who live in these places have little bottles of paint thinner tucked in their pants with wet cloths held to their noses.

I often ask the Spirit to lead and to guide, because I don't know what to do or to say when we go. But Father is always working.

I remember my first day there. I went down the hill into the colony and was met by these smiling Hondurans, slurring their speech because using the thinner. I smiled and talked to them in my simple Spanish, often not understanding what they were saying. A man walked in, using thinner. I asked him how he was doing; he started crying. "Tengo muchas problemas," I remember him saying. I felt prompted to pray for him right there, and did.  He thanked me, telling me he was encouraged.  But what struck me most was that, as he was leaving, he kept repeating the name, "Jesus, Jesus." I have not seen that man again, but I pray that the Lord impressed Jesus on the man's heart.

Jesus is moving in La Kennedy.

I have seen Jesus' work in a man here named Caesar. A girl on our team named Jen has been investing a lot of time with Caesar. I was with Jen when she invited Caesar to read the Bible with her. I had the privilege of joining them.

When we finally sat down to read the Word, Caesar offered to pray with us. We bowed our heads to pray, and I was struck by what he said. Caesar thanked the Lord for his life, for forgiving our sin and saving us, for the Lord sending our team to share Christ with the lost in La Kennedy. He told God he wanted to change his life and to draw closer to the Lord. By the end of his prayer, I was on the edge of tears. We had a brother in Christ living down in the dumps, a light in a dark place.

I say these things to show how Jesus is moving and has been moving here in La Kennedy. The same is true everywhere. God is moving, and He offers us the privilege of joining in what He is doing today. Will you join Him today?
