The New Gentleman in My Life

I always knew that He existed, but I was never really taught anything about Him. I never studied the word to get to know Him or to find out about who He is. I ignored His voice and pushed Him off of my mind. I’m talking about the Holy Spirit.

My mind was literally blown the third night of training camp. We had a speaker come and give a session about the Holy Spirit. This was the first teaching I had ever heard on this topic. The very first point that the speaker made was this simple yet perspective changing truth:

“The Holy Spirit is a “HE” not an it”

I was so taken back…. a “He”? I had never really thought of that before. I think I had always viewed the Holy Spirit as an “it”. That speaker had me hooked from that moment on. He continued to tell us about the character of the Holy Spirit:

• He has emotions/feelings (Ephesians 4:30)
• He teaches us (John 14:26)
• He intercedes for us (Romans 8:26-27)
• He testifies who we are (Romans 8:16)
• He convicts us of sins (John 16:8)
• He dwells in us (John 14:16-17)
• He is a gift from God (Luke 11:13)

That night session was probably one of the best and neatest talks I have ever listen to. We were all given time to just close our eyes and ask Him to invade us, fill us, and speak to us. As I sat there, I felt the most gentle and quiet peace wash over and consume me. From that night on I have continued to press into the Holy Spirit, learn more about Him, listen to His voice, and let Him work through me

Throughout my time here on the mission field I have continued to learn more and more about Him and who He is to me. I have learned about listening to His voice daily so that I can start recognizing His voice on a regular basis. He is the fire that burns in me, and He refines my character with His refining fire. He is the gentleman there to comfort me in my struggles and the guiding hand to steer my steps. He fills me up and empowers me.

About a week ago I had decided to lead team time one night. Mid-afternoon that day I was panicking because I hadn’t taken any time to prepare. All at once ideas began popping into my head, and before I knew it the entire night was planned out. Every single one of those ideas were whispers from the Holy Spirit. There is no way those were from me. Before we began team time that night I asked Him to consume me. I asked that my words be His and not my own. That night He empowered me and spoke through me. Every word that came out of my mouth was from Him.

He continues to show me His goodness daily. I am still learning about the power of the Holy Spirit and what that will look like in my life. I am so excited to continue living a Spirit led and Spirit filled life. He is true gentleman who refines me, speaks to me, and works through me.
