Water, Water, Water

I can’t seem to get away from water. I go to Texas (which was supposedly in a drought) for a month before my missions trip and it rained just about everyday. I mean the state is practically under water. The first night of training camp, it stormed really bad and our tented flooded. So, a lot of my clothes, suitcase, book bag, journal, sheets, and mattress all got wet. Let’s just say, it wasn’t the best way to start off my 2 month adventure. Upon arriving at Honduras, our host, Gracie, informs us that Honduras has also been in a drought. Well, I definitely got poured on in the back of the pick up truck on the way to the compound from the airport. Naturally, I was very excited to sleep in a dry bed the first night. There’s 10 of us girls staying in 3 rooms that each have 4 beds in them. So, I go and set my sheets up and all is well. I was so excited to crawl into bed that night. When the time came, I climbed up into the bunk just to find that my bed was soaked and the ceiling was leaking. There was a 1 in 12 chance that I was going to choose that bed. What in the world is the Lord trying to teach me? I can’t seem to escape this water. Well, my relationship with God has been very dry recently. I probably feel the farthest from Him I have my entire life. You could say that I feel like I am in a drought in our relationship. Psalm 42:1 says “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with Him?” I haven’t been thirsting after God. I’ve pushed Him aside and tried doing things my own way. I want to thirst after Him again. I think He is showering me with water as a reminder of who ultimately quenches thirst: nothing of this world, but God alone. John 4:10 says “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” Jesus is the living water. He is the only one who can forever quench our thirst. It doesn’t matter if you are a millionaire, if you are the most popular kid in high school, if you have the best hair, or if you have 10 cars. All those things are temporary. God is the only thing that is eternal. He is who we should thirst after. Isaiah 55:1 says “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters.” God is inviting us to come. He isn’t carefree about it. He desires us to thirst after Him. I also believe that God is watering me so that I might be poured out to others. Psalm 1:3 says “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not whither. Whatever he does prospers.” Maybe God is watering me so that I might produce fruit again. I was living a lukewarm Christian life. But it’s time that I realize that God is trying to quench my thirst and fill me up so that I might pour into others. Within these next two months, I am going to meet a lot of people who need poured into. Who need the love of God and my time and energy. Sometimes we ignore so many of the blatantly obvious signs from God, and He must literally flood our lives so that we turn our eyes back to Him. I’m excited to grow close to God once again, and I know He never left my side. I’m ready to leave this drought and be filled up on my everlasting Savior!
