Maybe one of the most important lessons I have learned on the field thus far is how to laugh, in just about every situation. Here are some examples…
When you have plain cornflakes for breakfast…every morning
When two of your teammates get diagnosed with Dengue fever and chikungunya at the same time
When there is a scruffy dog that roams the doctor’s office, including the exam rooms and the lab
When you have searched the country for peanut butter with no success
When it hasn’t rained in days and there is no water to shower or flush the toilets
When you accidently drop your toilet paper in the toilet…and have to fish it out
When you go to the police station and they are all sleeping in their offices
When the whole teams gets lice
When you find a roach the size of your hand on the wall, and it has wings
When you crave puppy chow so bad that mixing concrete reminds you of that delicious snack
When you stand on the street for an hour trying to catch a taxi
When you get bruises from riding in the back of a truck on unpaved roads
When you frantically pull laundry off the line as it starts to pour down rain (most days around 4pm)
When you can’t sleep because the whole town is having a massive fiesta across the street, at 2 am
When you miss the BYOTP (bring your own toilet paper) memo in a public restroom
Just a few of the joys of living in Honduras:) But truthfully, I know that these are the things that I will miss about this place. It certainly is teaching me how to not take things so seriously, how to just laugh it off 🙂
