Beauty in the Storm

The day our team showed up to Gracie’s, so did two other girls. One was a thirty year old mom who was pregnant with her father’s baby, and the other was her ten year old daughter (also her father’s child.) As I started to talk to her I found out she didn’t want the baby and that she felt hopeless. She never smiled or engaged in conversation. About two weeks later, she woke up in the morning bleeding. They thought she was having a miscarriage. She was devastated because she realized she had actually grown to love her baby. We all laid hands on her and prayed for her...

Simplicity

Live simply.    I know this is easy for me to say. I ‘m taking showers here at the will of the rain and our breakfast menu has a will forever consist of…cornflakes. Bear with me. There’s more to living simply than that.    Back home it’s easy to be so attached to comforts or people or feelings. So attached that you’re blinded by your dependency on these finite things that don’t fill us up. And the more we aren’t satisfied by these things that don’t fill us up, the more we run to more things.   And I didn’t really...

It’s in the Little Things

Earlier this week we were sitting with Gracie in her living room doing devotions, our normal routine 3 days a week. She randomly stood up and walked to the other room. When she came back, our faces lit up with utter joy and we erupted with squeals of excitement when we saw what she had in her hands……….bite sized Hershey bars. It was by far the best two bites of chocolate I have ever had, literally made my day.   After we laughed at our ridiculous reaction to tiny pieces of chocolate, I was reminded what the Lord has been teaching me through a book I have been...

Don’t cry over spilled…hot sauce

“Uhhhh…SIERRRRAAAAA…” is not really sound that I enjoy hearing as a leader. Immediately, ten thousand things of what could have possibly gone wrong crossed my mind and I hopped off my top bunk bed to rush to the small living area next to my room where I found two teammates with appalled looks on their faces huddled over a pile of dripping, red… Hot sauce. Yes, hot sauce.  Which probably doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, but after a week and a half of eating Honduran food (don’t get me wrong, we sure are spoiled here & it’s...

The Lord is a River

Since we first arrived in Honduras, we have heard several times that the country has been in a 3 year drought. We talked about the importance of water conservation before we even arrived at Gracie’s. So, when it rained on us on our drive from the airport to La Ermita, I took that as a sweet welcome from the Lord. Since then, it has rained every single night. I’m not talking about a light sprinkle either, it has been a downpour EVERY NIGHT. I’m starting to question the Honduran definition of “drought” 😉 Also, rain on a tin roof is unexpectedly loud which...

A Father for the Fatherless

Well, we are finally here! We arrived Friday, late morning, without any issues along the way. Praise Him. Our ministry contact, Gracie, picked us up at the airport. I knew 5 minutes after meeting her that we were in for an incredible adventure. Honduras is sometimes referred to as a fatherless nation. The vast majority of households are single mother homes. Unemployment, drugs, alcohol, and abuse of all kinds have ravaged this country. Satan is truly waging a war here against families. Gracie and her husband, papi Lee, are fighting back. They run an incredible ministry that focuses on...
